When the new 2016 Toyota Prius is revealed at a press preview this September, it will the first new Prius design in about seven years. That is much longer than most car’s go between major make-overs. A quick glance at the news today might give one the impression that Prius sales have slowed to a trickle. In fact, although $2.50 gasoline has hurt green-car sales of all types, the seven-year-old Prius is still one of the top-selling cars in the U.S. market.
In July Toyota sold 17,924 Prius cars. Here are a few observations. First, the Prius line outsells all of Cadillac combined. However, when it is compared to its real peers, green cars, the Prius dominates so thoroughly it is hard to overstate its significance. Here are just a few facts. In July, the Prius line outsold the Chevy Volt by almost 14 to one. It outsold the Tesla Model S, the top-selling electric car by more than ten to one. Here’s the zinger.
