Toyota Prius fun facts ahead of the all-new 2016 reveal

The all-new 2016 Prius will be revealed to journalists on September 8th in Las Vegas. Here are a few Prius facts some other publications may leave out of their announcement.

When the new 2016 Toyota Prius is revealed at a press preview this September, it will the first new Prius design in about seven years. That is much longer than most car’s go between major make-overs. A quick glance at the news today might give one the impression that Prius sales have slowed to a trickle. In fact, although $2.50 gasoline has hurt green-car sales of all types, the seven-year-old Prius is still one of the top-selling cars in the U.S. market.

In July Toyota sold 17,924 Prius cars. Here are a few observations. First, the Prius line outsells all of Cadillac combined. In fact, GM as a company has only one car model, the Cruze, that outsells the Prius in any given month. It goes without saying that the Prius outsells every smaller automaker’s best-selling cars. Mazda, Subaru, and VW don’t have a single model that can challenge the Prius’ monthly sales rate.

The fact that the Prius is one of the country’s top selling cars of any type is amazing enough. However, when it is compared to its real peers, green cars, the Prius dominates so thoroughly it is hard to overstate its significance. Here are just a few facts. In July, the Prius line outsold the Chevy Volt by almost 14 to one. It outsold the Tesla Model S, the top-selling electric car by more than ten to one. Here’s the zinger. The Toyota Prius, with its seven-year-old technology, outsold the entire electrified car market in the U.S. by two to one.

The new Prius will undoubtedly get better fuel economy and be improved in numerous ways. We will bring you all the details as soon as they are made public.
