Goodyear Dunlop’s winter tyres have topped tyre tests carried out by Germany’s AutoZeitung Allrad. The magazine test is targeted at owners of 4×4 and SUVs and reinforces the benefits of fitting winter tyres to all-wheel drive vehicles as well as two-wheel drives.
Goodyear’s UltraGrip 8 Performance beat three more competitors in snowy, wet and dry conditions to take the title. Achieving the highest overall score of 356 points, the winter tyre’s outstanding performance on dry and snowy road surfaces was cited as a key reason for its success.
Dunlop’s SP WinterSport 4D achieved third place in the test and was named “very recommendable”. The ultra-high performance winter tyre achieved 531 points and was commended by magazine testers for its performance in wet conditions.
The AutoZeitung Allrad test team determined the winner through a series of tests in wet, dry and snowy conditions. In snowy conditions, the magazine measured the braking distance, driving safety, handling and traction performance. In wet conditions, aquaplaning was included and in the dry, rolling resistance and comfort were factors also taken in to consideration.
The independent test was carried out on a Volkswagen Tiguan in the tyre size 235/50 R18 that fits the BMW X3, Ford Kuga, Nissan X-Trail and Volvo XC70.
“It has long been a misconception that if an individual owns a 4×4 vehicle, they don’t need to fit winter tyres”, commented Kate Rock, Goodyear Dunlop’s Consumer and Brand PR Manager, “Following this, and the 4×4 winter tyre test that Auto Express conducted at the Tamworth Snowdome, the benefits of fitting winter tyres on these vehicles are now being recognised.
