Dunlop showcases Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

Dunlop is showcasing a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 model at Geneva International Motor Show with its partner, AMG Customer Sports. The same model, equipped with Dunlop Sport Maxx racing tyres, won one of the biggest and toughest races in the world in 2013—the Nürburgring 24h – the first win for Mercedes-AMG in this race. Dunlop is continuing to develop race tyres for Mercedes-AMG and the unique challenges of the Nürburgring with the goal of winning the 24h again.

Dunlop was involved in the development work of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 and was the first tyre manufacturer to be a technical partner of AMG Customer Sports. Dunlop made key adjustments prior to the race to offer more grip and braking power, and the performance of the race tyres from Dunlop was a key element in succeeding on the demanding Nürburgring course and securing the prestigious Nürburging 24h title in 2013.

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is unique: 33 left turns, 40 right turns and long high speed straights, dips and compressions. The drivers christened it the Green Hell, as it is one of the hardest and most challenging as well as the longest race track in the world – not least because of the many different types of asphalt over the long lap.

Since the last win, Dunlop embarked on an intensive development program to take the next step forward required in one of the few races that offer open competition between the tyre manufacturers rather than mandating a standard control tyre, as in F1. The Dunlop focus is on developments in steering feedback, cold weather performance and
further enhancing durability to ensure that the car can race for longer at a maximum performance level between pit stops.

The combination of excellent weight distribution, a low center of gravity, powerful drive, efficient aerodynamics and an exemplary safety system optimizes the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. It combines a pioneering technology package with an aluminum spaceframe, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine, six-speed racing transmission and sequential gearbox and the Dunlop Sport Maxx racing tyres are tuned to suit these characteristics.

“AMG Customer Sports is a key partner for us at Dunlop, and we share the same commitment to exceptional performance and durability. We worked together closely to achieve success at the Nürburging 24h in 2013, and we hope to race and win together again in the future, ” said James Bailey, Public Relations and Communications Director, Dunlop Motorsport EMEA. “We are proud to showcase this spectacular vehicle in Geneva to tell the story of our partnership and joint ambitions.”
