The need for speed and safety will drive the demand for Michelin's tubeless radial tyres among commercial vehicles, according to Nour Bouhassoun, Chairman and President - Africa, India and Middle East, Michelin AIM FZE.
He was addressing media persons at the launch of tubeless, radial truck tyres at the Michelin India factory in Thiruvallur district, about 60 km north of Chennai.
Michelin today launched the Michelin X multi-range of tubeless radial tyres for commercial vehicles in India.
These tyres have been developed specifically for the domestic market.
A unique feature is that separate tyres are available for the front wheels, steer axles, and rear wheels, the drive axles. Prices start at about 20,000 for each tyre.
Bouhassoun said tubeless tyres dominate the markets in Europe and the US where speeds are around a 100 km an hour. While in India the average speeds are still down, it is improving.
Mohan Kumar, Commercial Director, Passenger Cars and Trucks, Michelin India, said tubeless truck tyres are in demand among modern fleets with intercity operations.
Operators with coaches such as Volvo and Scania have recognised the benefits of fuel efficiency and added safety.
The factory near Chennai makes radial tyres that use tubes for commercial vehicles.
The unit which started production last year is steadily scaling up output. Last year its production was about 11,000 tonnes and in the current year it is expected to touch about 16,000 tonnes.
It has built up a distribution network across 100 cities and towns in India.
Bouhassoun said Michelin India has also launched the tyre retreading business.
The high quality tyres are capable of being retreaded multiple times and offer high value for money.
