The National Roads Authority (NRA) is advising mobile tyre fitters to exercise extreme caution when carrying out repairs on the country’s motorway network. The advice comes in the wake of an enquiry from the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) which sought direction from the NRA on how to safely deal with a motorway roadside repair. ITIA President Kevin Farrell commented: “Following a number of queries from our members we contacted the National Road Authority to get clarity on best practice when dealing with a truck tyre repair on a motorway.” According to the NRA repairs should not be carried out on the side of the motorway if it is deemed unsafe through a risk assessment or otherwise by the competent person asked to carry out the repair until the necessary Traffic Management is put in place or the vehicle is moved off site. The person carrying out the risk assessment should be a person who is competent to carry out risk assessments for such works. Tyre fitters are adviced to contact the MTCC on 0818 715 100 if they want to request the assistance on a Motorway for situations where they deem there is a risk to the road user or other parties. It should be noted there is a cost associated with providing any Traffic Management, which will not be covered by the NRA. If any party requests Traffic Management they will be required to cover the costs of the service provided by the Traffic Management Contractor.
